THE HOLLOW PLANET

For centuries, humanity has looked up at the stars searching for superior intelligence, completely unaware that they were looking in the wrong direction. When perfectly spherical, miles-wide sinkholes begin erasing entire cities from the map without warning, a desperate joint scientific and military expedition is sent into the deepest known cavern system to investigate. They do not find magma chambers or tectonic shifting. They find a perfectly engineered, unimaginably vast interior world. The terrifying twist of  The Hollow Planet is not that there are monsters in the dark. It is that the beings who reside there are the true inheritors of Earth. They are millions of years older, infinitely more intelligent, and operate on a scale of existence humanity cannot comprehend. To them, the surface of the Earth is a chaotic, radiation-blasted wasteland where only primitive, short lived lifeforms (like humans) struggle to survive. They did not "retreat" underground; they evolved there, in the perfect, stable, enclosed environment of the inner sphere. The sinkholes are not an invasion. They are an infrastructure project. The interior civilization is simply expanding its habitat outward, completely indifferent to the microscopic surface dwellers they are displacing. The true horror comes from insignificance, humanity is not facing an enemy that wants to conquer them; they are facing a god-like intelligence that doesn't even recognize them as sentient.
